Biography
The Environmental Health Unit was established in 1989 following the amalgamation of a number of wider Christchurch authorities. It formed part of the Development Group. The Unit was responsible for providing inspection services relating to environmental health across the City. This included infectious diseases investigations and the inspection of premises including restaurants, swimming pools, camping grounds, apartment buildings and dangerous goods storage. The unit also undertook inspections relating to problems caused by poor housing; land, water and air polution, improper refuse disposal, litter and the keeping of animals. Dog control and dog registration was also managed through this Unit.
The unit was a lead in the 'Keep Christchurch Beautiful' campaign.
In December 1992, this Unit went through a restructure and although it remained within the Development Group, its functions were split between two new Units. Environmental Policy and Planning, Environmental Administration and Public Health and Safety.
