Biography
Thomas Gapes was born in London and was one of 14 siblings to James Gapes and Jane Sophia Gill Le Lain. They arrived in Lyttelton as a family in 1859 aboard the Regina.
In 1868, Thomas went into business with his father James, trading as J Gapes and Son., a vendor of paint, glass and paper-hangings. James passed the business to Thomas in 1889.
Thomas was alo the Secretary of the Canterbury Early Settlers' Association in 1892 and was elected as Mayor of Christchurch from 1894-1895, just like his father James has been. Thomas died in 1913.
