Scope and Contents

Architectural plans from a wide range of commercial buildings, largely in the central city, submitted to Christchuch City Council as part of building permit and consent processes. The vast majority of these plans relate to office, shop, warehouse and factory spaces within the central city as well as social spaces such as cinemas as theatres.

Plans mostly include exterior elevations, interior floor plans and technical drawings. Some include specifications and associated correspondence relating to the building consent process.

Arrangement

These plans are arranged chronologically. Plans relating to the same building have been grouped together where the relationship is clear.

In some instances plans relating to the same address are not listed together. If it was unclear if the plans related to the same address, if the address or usage of the building appears to have changed over time or if the plans related to vastly different decades they have been listed separatly. Over time, more information about addresses and locations may emerge and in these cases records will be linked to confirm these connections rather than plans being relisted and reoganised.

Custodial History

These plans are in varying condition as they were used as working drawings by Christchurch City Council. It is believed that these plans were often taken out to sites across the city and many of them contain additional annotations from the Council as part of the building consent process. There are also several different numbering systems present on the plans, however no records have survived to establish what these relate to.

These plans were collated and initially listed by the Christchurch City Council Heritage Unit before being transferred to the Council Archives.

Some of these plans are for Christchurch City Council assets and properties. The decision was made to retain these as part of this sequence as they were brought together and managed as part of the Heriage Unit. A more extensive set of plans relating to Council assets are available as part of Technical Services and Design plans.

Existence and Location of Copies

Some of the plans in this sub-series have been digitised. Links to those digitised are available as part of each individual record.

These plans are part of an ongoing digitisation programme so it is expected that further plans will become available.
