Biography
This Committee was formed to support the applications of Jewish and other refugees from Hitler's regime, up to the beginning of the Second World War in September 1939. Ivan Sutherland (1897-1952) and Karl Popper (1902-1994) from the University of Canterbury, were founding members. The Society of Friends (the Quakers) were also involved, after an Austrian resident in Christchurch asked for the Friends help in getting news from his relatives overseas. The Friends also appointed a representative to the committee upon its foundation in 1939. The Committee also liaised with the Society of Friend's Germany Emergency Committee in London.
