Biography

The Winter Garden opened in 1927 as a cabaret and social hall, becoming a popular venue for debutante balls and big-band concerts. The Queen dined at the Winter Garden on her 1963 visit. The venue struggled after a decline in social dancing with The Trade Union Centre buying the building in 1984 and leasing it to the Media Club - which ran it as a venue for live music and events. Half the building was demolished for car-parking. The remaining building was demolished in 2011 following the Christchurch earthquakes
