Biography

Most of these papers concern William Vincent, brewer, of the firm Vincent & Co., and Charles Franklin Todhunter, who entered into partnership with him in about 1873. The firm continued under the same name. William Vincent came out to New Zealand in 1861. He worked on sheep stations until 1871 when he set up his brewing firm. He built the City Brewery in Colombo Street, now the old Malthouse, home of the Canterbury Children's Theatre. In 1889 he returned to sheep farming. Charles Franklin Todhunter was a timber merchant until he became partner with Vincent in his brewery.
