Halswell Library
Dates
- Existence: 1897 - 2015
Biography
A library committee was formed on 11 December 1897 and Alfred Ainsworth was elected librarian. For the first fifty years of its existence, the library was located at Halswell School. In 1968, the Halswell County Council and Paparua County Council amalgamated and the library came under control of the Paparua County Council. Following this, the Halswell Library moved into the old offices of the Halswell County Council, on the corner of Sparks and Halswell Roads. The library was run by volunteers until 1975, when Mrs Joyce Turner was employed as its first paid librarian, though volunteers continued to help until 1990. In 1989 when Paparua County Council and Christchurch City Council amalgamated, the library became part of Canterbury Public Libraries (now Christchurch City Libraries). The Halswell library remained open until the Christchurch City Council decided that it was too small for the needs of the growing community. It closed on 3 October 2015 just before a new library, Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre opened up at 341 Halswell Road.
