Christchurch Male Voice Choir

 Organization

Dates

  • Existence: 1917 - 1956

Biography

The choir was founded in 1917 by the late Dr. John Christopher Bradshaw, and gave its first performance in that year. It was formed for “…the practice and public performance of male voice especially old English glees and madrigals.” First conducted by Dr. Bradshaw, his successor upon his death was Len Barnes. Occasionally, concerts would include the ladies of the Philharmonic Club.

Change of venue reflected the changing times of the depression, World War II, and lack of subscribers: Choral Hall, Municipal Concert Hall, Radiant Hall (later Radiant Theatre), Jellicoe Hall, Scottish Hall.
