Biography

Standish and Preece was a photography studio founded on 218 High Street in Christchurch, in 1885 by Frank Berry Standish and Alfred Ernest Preece. Their partnership only lasted 5 years, with Mr Standish retiring in 1891 and departing for California and Preece selling up in 1945. The studio continued operating, however, until 2011 and the Canterbury Earthquakes, officially closing in 2020. They were known chiefly for portraits and group photographs. Existing for 135 years, it is New Zealand's longest running photographic business. Over 75,000 of its images are now held by Canterbury Museum.
