Biography
A group established in London for the settlement of Canterbury, New Zealand. The minutes of the London meetings of the Society run from April 25 - August 15 1850. After time for the voyage out, they held their first New Zealand meeting in Lyttelton on Friday 20th December 1850, and their final meeting on Tuesday 4th February 1851. They then reconvened as the Society of Land-Purchasers in the Canterbury Settlement. The minutes of their meetings, held in Christchurch, run from 3rd April 1851 to 22nd January 1852.

The records of the Society of Canterbury Colonists includes minutes drawn up by the First body of the Canterbury Colonists at their rooms 1A Adelphi Terrace [London] : the "Society of Canterbury Colonists" April 25, 1850. At the back of the handwritten original minute book is the text: "1850.
