Biography

The Port Victoria Library opened in 1874, and became the Governors Bay Public Library about 1928 or earlier. Dr and Mrs Pairman settled at Governors Bay in 1907. Dr Pairman loaned the community a sum of money and donated 2.2 perches of his land above Merlincote Crescent, and a community library was built. The Governor’s Bay Public Library Association was formed on 25 May 1928. Books from the Canterbury Public Library and later from the Country Library Service supplemented the collection. Dr Pairman’s library building was physically relocated to the new Community Centre on Cresswell Avenue in July 1962. The library continued into the late 1980s. The building was later used for a playgroup.
