Biography

The Ellesmere Guardian was launched in 1880. It was the second newspaper published in the Ellesmere area, starting 2 days after the Ellesmere Advertiser. The office for the newspaper switched between Southbridge and Leeston. Horace McMillan, a 19 year old reporter on the paper, bought the Guardian in 1908 and remained in charge until retiring in 1947. It merged with the Malvern Record to form the Central Canterbury News in 1983.
