Biography
The Central Heathcote District Roads Board, was formed in 1863 via a Canterbury Provincial Council ordinance which established three road boards along the Heathcote River: East, Central and South Heathcote. In 1864 the Central Heathcote Roads Board was amended and became Spreydon Roads Board. The Spreydon Roads Board was in 1911 gazetted a Borough and became the Spreydon Borough Council.
Early Spreydon began to develop as a residential suburb of Christchurch as it was situated south of Sydenham Borough astride Lincoln Road, the main route south-west of the city to Tai Tapu, Halswell, Lake Ellesmere and Akaroa.
In April 1921 the Spreydon Borough Council amalgamated with Christchurch City Council.
