Biography

The Christchurch Board of Health was originally established by the Public Health Act 1876 which saw local boards reporting to a Central Board of Health. The Christchurch Board of Health was initially under the provisions of the Christchurch Drainage Board (established in 1876 with the end of Provincial Government) and covered the whole of the Christchurch metropolitan area. Although initially a success the Board was not supported by Christchurch City Council (who had wanted the Board to be under their jurisdiction), it therefore ran out of funds and public health stopped being administered by the Drainage Board in 1885.
