Hurunui Rabbit Board

 Organization

Biography

The Hurunui Rabbit Board was formed in 1887 to stop the spread of rabbits in the Amuri district. They raised £12,000 and commissioned the building of an 80 mile (128 kilometre) high-quality rabbit-proof fence. Despite their best efforts rabbits did get through. In 1928 the Hurunui Rabbit Board decided it could no longer maintain the fences and sold them to respective landowners.
