Biography
A British civil engineering firm specialising in maritime and port engineering which offered services to colonies.
The principals were:
John Coode (1816-1892) born in Cornwall, England, a civil engineer who worked on many harbours around the world, including those in England, Australia, Table Bay in South Africa, Colombo, and the Suez Canal.
William Matthews (1844-1922), Cornwall, a civil engineer who worked on international harbours and docks, including Singapore, Malta, and Dover.
Matthews was chief assistant to John Coode and after Coode’s death, Matthews became a partner in the firm with Coode’s son, John Charles Coode.
The firm was employed in 1906 by the Lyttelton Harbour Board for the scheme to construct a canal through to Christchurch. The proposed ship canal was to come through Woolston and set up a harbour not far from the railway station on Moorhouse Avenue. The canal never eventuated.
Following Matthews retirement Coode, Son and Matthews was renamed 'Coode, Fitzmaurice, Wilson and Mitchell'.
