Sir William Matthews (1844-1922) also of Cornwall, was a civil engineer who also worked on international harbours and docks, including Singapore, Malta, and Dover. Matthews was chief assistant to John Coode and after Coode’s death, Matthews became a partner in the firm with Coode’s son, John Charles Coode.
The firm was employed in 1906 by the Lyttelton Harbour Board for the scheme to construct a canal through to Christchurch. The proposed ship canal was to come through Woolston and set up a harbour not far from the railway station on Moorhouse Avenue. The canal never eventuated.
