Biography

Edgar Alfred Luttrell (known as Alfted Edgar) and his younger brother Edward Sydney Luttrell (known as Sidney) were born and raised in Australia. Alfred undertook an architectural aprenticeship and established his own practice in Tasmania in 1886. Sidney served his architectural apprenticeship with his older brother Alfred and became a partner in the firm of A & S Luttrell in 1897. It is unclear when the pair moved to Christchurch, New Zealand but by 1902 the company was known as S & A Luttrell and in 1906 their younger brother George Luttrell had joined the firm.

The firm was known for using reinforced concrete in their buildings and designed buildings such as the King Edward Barracks, Theatre Royal, Beaths Department Store and the Addington Raceway grandstands. Alfred Luttrell died in 1924 and from then design work at the firm passed to Jack Hollis and Allan Manson with Manson taking over the firm following Sidney Luttrell's death in 1932.
