Biography

The Christchurch Press is the oldest surviving newspaper in the South Island. It has been in publication since 1861, when it was founded by James Edward FitzGerald (1818-1896) who was sole owner until 1867. The Christchurch Press Company itself was established in 1890 by George Stead, and the Christchurch Press Company was sold in 1987 to Independent Newspapers Ltd.

Correspondence and other material concerning the construction of The Press Building at the corner of Worcester Street and Cathedral Square an the ordering of machinery for the new building. Much of the correspondence is to or from Mr. George G. Stead. Includes blue print plan of a proposed pneumatic despatch tube system by the Lamson Despatch Co. of N.Z., 25th June 1908.
