Biography

A temperance friendly society, the Independent Order of Rechabites originated in 1835 in Manchester. In 1866 this New Zealand Central District no. 86 was set up in Wellington, its first Tent being Hope of Wellington. By 1910 there were 79 Tents in this District, distibuted from Gisborne to Bluff. No. 26 Tent, the Pride of Christchurch, was instituted in July 1877.
