Islington Freezing Works
Dates
- Existence: 1889 - 2016
Biography
The chemical laboratory at Islington freezing works analysed material from Smithfield, Picton, Burnside and Imlay works also. The early letterbooks and laboratory analysis books are stamped Christchurch Meat Co. which had freezing works at Islington. These archives seem to have come to this collection from the Alliance Freezing Company (Southland), now the Alliance Group, which has a Christchurch office with works at Sockburn. The Christchurch Meat Company formed in 1889 and opened the Islington Freezing Works the same year, though meat preserving works had been in the area for the last twenty five years. The Christchurch Meat Company became the New Zealand Refrigeration Company in 1916, then became Waitaki New Zealand Refrigeration Ltd in 1976, then Waitaki International in 1986. The freezing works closed in 1988 after a restructuring of the meat industry. In 1992 the Primary Producers Co-operative Society bought the Islington works and the Islington Venison Plant was built, and deer processing continued until 2016
