Biography
Anna Holmes Northcroft, better known as Nancy Northcroft, was a pioneer for work as an architect and city planner. She was the first woman to be awared a Fellowship of the New Zealand Institute of Architects in 1966. In 1978 she was awarded the Gold Medal of the New Zealand Planning Institute. In the 1978 New Years Honours she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for her services to town planning. In 1994 the New Zealand Planning Institute established the Nancy Northcroft Planning Practice Award in her honour.
In 1949 she was a town planning officer at the Christchurch City Council, then in 1954 she was made chief planner. She was also the founding chief executive of the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority (CRPA). She warned about urban sprawl issues and implemented a "green belt" around the city as part of the 1959 CRPA scheme. In 1963 she moved to working in the private sector.
