Biography

Lawyer, magistrate, politician, explorer, naturalist, photographer. Travers arrived in New Zealand in 1849, practised law in Nelson, Christchurch and Wellington, and had an intermittent political career between 1853 and 1878. He was a well known natural historian and photographer.

Scope and Contents

Identified but undated (except one, 1858) photographs of central Christchurch, Avonside, Sumner, Pigeon Bay, Nelson, Hutt Valley, Wellington and Bay of Islands by William Thomas Locke Travers.

Includes a photograph of the wreck of the Oliver Lang, Wellington, 1858. Inside the back cover are four relatively recent photographs of the Queenstown-Lakes area.

Dates: 1858-1870
