Biography

Mary Thompson came out to New Zealand with her family on the Minerva, leaving England in September 1852 and arriving at Lyttelton in February 1853. Her father, Frederick Thompson, was appointed mathematics master at Christ's College by Henry Jacobs, in 1854. In the same year her mother, Mary Ann, opened a girls' school which continued until the late 1870s. Mary was also a teacher, first at Maria Thomson's school in Christchurch for ten years. In the 1870s she had her own school in Greymouth.

Photocopied typescript reminiscences of Mary B. Thompson. Mary Thompsons reminiscences give descriptions of Christchurch in the very early days including her experiences opening a girls' school which continued until the late 1870s.

Mary was also a teacher, first at Maria Thomson's school in Christchurch for ten years. In the 1870s she had her own school in Greymouth.
