Biography

Captain James Penfold came to New Zealand from Australia on his ship the Excelsior in 1861. In 1862 he built the sod hut for himself and his family, on the banks of the Heathcote River in Mt. Pleasant, near the Ferrymead bridge. In 1944 the sod hut was taken over by the Christchurch City Council.
