Biography
Henry Newton was vicar of Ross, South Westland, from 1902-1907. He was well-known as a climber in New Zealand before the first World War. He left to live in England (one of these journals contains accounts of English and European trips), returning to tramp and climb in New Zealand in 1934-1935.

Scope and Contents
Two manuscript journals of Henry Edward Newton. One journal (1934-1935) is an exercise book relating the tramp to the headwaters of the Arawhata River (South Westland) and the climbing of Mount Ionia. The other journal (1930-1935) contains press clippings, a map and other inserts (1906-1951).
There are full notes on this journal inside the front cover written by A.J. Scott in July 1962.
