Biography
Charles Rae was a principal promotor of the Christchurch Mechanics Institute, and a founder member of the Canterbury Trades Council and the Christchurch branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. He founded The Guardian & Canterbury Advertiser (1852), then bought and edited the Kaikoura Herald and East Coast Advertiser (1869-1872).

The papers of Charles Joseph Rae includes photocopies of a handwritten newspaper title page (Guardian, Christchurch, 1852, and Kaikoura Herald, 1869 and 1870, both partially written by Charles Rae) and two handwritten dedications to his children, 1873 and 1875.
