Biography

Sydney Taylor, born in Port Chalmers, was one of New Zealand's best-known press and publicity photographers. He was the first permanent photographer and cinematographer for the Government Tourist Department, from 1912 to 1925. He photographed state visits,such as that of the Prince of Wales in 1920. In 1919 and in 1921 he travelled to, and photographed, Fiji, Samoa and Rarotonga. In 1925 he became the first full-time photographer for the Otago Daily Times. He retired in 1945.
