Biography

A brief history of Tram Road, Kaiapoi, which was earlier called Boys Tram Road after the pioneer surveyor John Cowell Boys. John Cowell Boys came to New Zealand in 1841 as a cadet surveyor with the New Zealand Company. After three years he returned to England to complete his qualifications, then in 1849 returned to New Zealand. He worked in Canterbury, first under Captain Thomas then under Thomas Cass. He settled near Rangiora, calling his property Betshanger, after the village in Sussex where he was born.
