Biography

William and Mary Tod arrived in Wellington on the Katherine Stewart Forbes in 1841. At first they farmed in the Manawatu, but the Maori Wars forced them to return to Wellington. In 1845 they came to Canterbury to work for the Deans brothers, fellow Scots. In 1851 they farmed at Fendalton, Christchurch, selling up in 1858 as Christchurch grew, and moving out to farm at Lincoln. They started the first school in Lincoln, in 1858, and also gave the land for the Presbyterian church to be built.
