Biography
Louis Elerig was born in Middlesex, England, on 10 Apr. 1844 in Saint Martin in the Field and came to Nelson where he married Hannah Bomforth (b. 1844 in Nelson) on 25 Apr 1867 in Nelson. He was a Christchurch commercial traveller and lived with his wife and their family at 188 Worcester Street. He died on 18 August 1909. The cause of death was "verdict of coroner" - found drowned. He had been to a meeting at the Christchurch Club and, when walking home by the Avon River, fell, hitting his head, and ended up in the river near the Armagh Street bridge. His wife died on 28 August 1911 at 163 Springfield Road.

Louis Albert Elerig letters
The letters of Louis Albert Elerig includes those recording his experiences in the fires on the steamer Wairarapa near Gisborne and at the Albion Hotel in Invercargill. The Gisborne letter is to his wife and family, and the Invercargill letter is to his daughter Velia. Also includes copies of Southland Times articles about the hotel fire, 1888.
