Biography

John McKenzie, an Australian, opened his first chain store in Melbourne in 1905. In 1910 McKenzie opened stores in New Zealand, moving here himself. He established Roydon Lodge Stud in 1928, in Yaldhurst, Christchurch. In 1938 McKenzie set up the J.R. McKenzie Youth Education Fund, and in 1940 the J.R. McKenzie Trust, for charitable purposes, fellowships and grants. In 1949 John McKenzie was knighted, chiefly in recognition of his philanthropy. In 1950 he gave Risingholme Centre to Christchurch.
