Biography
Charlotte Hamilton, née Woodfield, was born near Rangiora, but soon after the family moved to Oxford, where her father was a sawyer. At the age of 14 she was sent to Christchurch to work in Hobday's drapery, on what is now Ballantyne's corner. In 1877 she married Thomas Hamilton, also from Oxford, who later was Vicar of St. Barnabas, Fendalton, from 1899-1919, and a Canon of Christchurch Cathedral. Charlotte's account of her childhood in Oxford and her early life, and her brief account of a winter trip from Oxford to Hokitika with her infant daughter (1881) are vivid and interesting.
