Biography

Louis Morrell lived with and worked for a Mr. Scott (milking, gardening etc.) on a property perhaps somewhere near Sydenham. He also worked in a gravel pit, perhaps also Mr. Scott's. (A Mr. John Scott had a quarry in Bridle Path Road, Heathcote). His main interest and occupation, however, was music. He played cornet with Mr. Spensley's Band at the Lyceum in Manchester Street and elsewhere. In Jan. 1895 he also joined the Sydenham Band. Nearly every entry mentions the number of hours he spent practising. A note on the first page of this copy reads "Canterbury diary of Louis Morrell before his return to the Hokianga settlement of Waimamaku".
