Biography
Ern Smith was Mayor of New Brighton from 1935-1941, before the borough became part of Christchurch City Council, a change he advocated. Before that he was a borough councillor from 1927. He ran a carrying business from 1914-1952, and was active in many aspects of New Brighton life. He lived at no. 9 George Street, now Oram Avenue.
