Biography

Archibald Mead was born in Nelson, the son of pioneers John and Mary Mead (née Louden). He worked as a groom until 1901, when he became a musterer on North Canterbury runs, until 1905. In 1906 he married Jane (Jean) Allingham and they settled on Leslie Hills Station, Hurunui, where Archibald was shepherd until 1911. He then managed various runs, finally settling at Glenmore Station near Lake Tekapo. In 1921 they bought Ben Nevis, a run on the shores of Lake Hayes, Otago, where they remained until retirement in 1948.
