Biography

Lawrence Ryan was born in Ireland, emigrating to Jersey at the time of the famine. In 1856 he married Ellen Moore, and in 1874 the family emigrated to New Zealand, in the Stonehouse, to Lyttelton. They bought land, and Laurence worked as a gardener. He was gardener and coachman for Bishop Harper for 14 years. They lived in Carlton Terrace which in 1910 became Shrewsbury Street.
