Biography

Reverend Staples Hamilton was an Anglican priest. He was born on 29 August 1859 in Crossgates, Leeds, and arrived in Lyttelton in 1876 and was ordained in Christchurch in 1882. He married Rose Margaret Wylde in 1885 and after her death in 1890, married Clara Rich in 1894. He was based in Leeston Parish until 1894, when he went to Hokitika. In 1899 he moved to Geraldine Parish, and in 1921 to St. Matthew's Church, St. Albans. He retired in 1945, aged 86, and died in his 97th year, on 25 March 1956. The diary entries are brief, and consist mostly of church and domestic detail.
