Biography

Henry Hicks, a black American, was a ship's cook on a New Zealand coastal trader. He did not ever go to school, and his spelling is often phonetic, but his prose style and handwriting are very clear. He married Adelaide Martin,a Scot and fellow worker, and they settled in Mosgiel where she opened a nursing home.

Bound photocopies of the diaries of Henry Hicks. These ship-board diaries cover 1856-1869, but at the back of v. 2 there are some jotted accounts and lists of cargo to 1881. These diaries are written on board a ship, a coastal trader around both islands of New Zealand where Hicks worked as a ship's cook.
