Biography

Henry Jones and his wife Emily left Llandenny, Monmouth, England, travelled to Gravesend and sailed 23 October 1879 on the Piako, leaving Gravesend at 4 o'clock, arriving Lyttelton, NZ Friday, 16 January 1880 at 2 p.m. (85 days). He wrote a day-to-day diary, with great detail including the fire on board, a fascinating story, and remarkable that he survived to tell the tale.

They settled in Christchurch, and there were no children. Emily, his wife, died soon after arriving. Henry at some stage lived in Lake Road, Leeston, but is buried in Christchurch. He died in 1935 aged 92

Includes details of events onboard the Piako leaving Gravesend to Lyttelton including a fire and a death onboard during the voyage.
