Biography
Charles Chilton was the son of West Eyreton farmers Thomas and Jane Chilton, who emigrated to New Zealand in 1862 when Charles was two. In 1881 Charles Chilton gained a first class M.A. in Zoology. His subject was Southern Hemisphere crustacea, of which little was then known. Dr. Chilton taught here and in Dunedin, then in 1887 gained New Zealand's first B.Sc., becoming a D.Sc. in 1893.
In 1888 he had married Elizabeth Jack. In 1895 they went to Edinburgh, where he studied medicine. He graduated in 1898, specialising in ENT. They returned to New Zealand in 1901, where he practised for a year, then from 1902-1928 he was professor of Biology at Canterbury College. Charles and Elizabeth had one child, Frank, who was studying medicine in Edinburgh when war broke out. He was killed at Gallipoli in 1915.
