Biography
Henry Thomson, born in Scotland, 1827, died in New Zealand, 1885. Thomson emigrated to Australia in 1852, and on to New Zealand in 1856. He settled in Nelson, where he married Mary Ann Coates in 1859. In 1865 they moved to Christchurch, where Henry joined his father-in-law Giles Coates in his jewellery firm. Prominent in the social and political life of Christchurch, as councillor and mayor (1877-1878), Henry Thomson was a noted Freemason for 46 years, achieving the rank of Grand Master.

Business records of G. Coates and Co. watchmakers and jewellers, including accounts, stock valuations, leases and legal papers for 1861-1889.
Also included are Coates, Thomson and Smith family papers from 1809-1890, namely birth and marriage certificates and various accounts and legal correspondence, especially relating to the death of Giles Coates in 1868.
