Biography

Mary was born to civil engineer George Archibald Keith Simmers and Jessie May nee MacDonald at Christchurch. She was a scientist with the Soil Bureau in Wellington and the Dept. of Endocrinology at Princess Margaret Hospital with 30 years of scientific research, periods of study in Boston and Edinburgh. In 1948 she married scientist and university lecturer in Physics and chemistry Walter Sidney Metcalf.

Cassettes containing oral histories, predominantly of women connected to Canterbury University. The initial project was set up by the Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Federation of University Women in 1989. Most interviews are conducted by Stancey Yeabsley and were recorded between 1989 - 2009.
