Biography
Thomas was born to bushman carpenter Thomas Peter Basher and Doris Slater nee Petrie at Ashburton. He did an electrical apprenticeship and was a blue-collar worker in various industries with multiple sclerosis. In 1966 Thomas married librarian Diane Lillian nee Milne, they later divorced and he married Nurse Barbara May nee Pope in 1972.
