Alice was born to clerk Robert Fisher and Gertrude Emmeline nee Stedman at Dunedin. She was a nurse, tutor, building projects planner and archivist. In 1973 Alice married coach driver Frank Silverson.

The initial project was set up by the Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Federation of University Women in 1989.
