Biography

James Filer was a Welsh miner who emigrated to New Zealand during the Depression with his wife Alice, their baby son Hubert (later a Christchurch pianist and teacher) and Alice's brother Tom. They settled first in Millerton, where James and Tom worked in the coal mine there. In 1923 the family moved to Christchurch.

Copy has title: Letters home. Some of the letters are written by Alice, and there are two letters from Wales, written by James Filer's stepmother, Lucretia Filer.

Dates: 1920-1921
