Biography
Alex and his brother Lloyd Stewart were from the farming district of Waverley, north of Wangaunui, sons of Jane and James Reid Stewart. Lloyd served in World War I as a pilot with the Royal Air Force and in World War II as a soldier with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Alex Stewart served in World War II as Sergeant air gunner with the Royal Air Force. Both brothers were prisoners of war in 1943 at Campo 57 at Gruppignano. They were later transferred to Germany.
