Biography

John Miln was born 8 December 1827 at Binzian Mill near Dunning, Perthshire. He arrived in Lyttelton 10 November 1851 and purchased land along the Halswell River. He supervised the building of many of the stone bridges, roads and schools in the district.

He was active in several organisations including the Canterbury Farmers Co-op, Canterbury Provincial Council, Islington Freezing works and Canterbury Central Co-operative Dairy Company. He married three times (Bethia Robertson, Helen Thornton, Catherine Thornton) and had 17 children. He died 2 February 1900 from pneumonia.
