Biography

Thomas Conway sailed to Port Chalmers on the Scoresby in 1862 with his father. He farmed in the Cust district for many years and was a member of the West Eyreton Road Board and school committee. In 1883 he married Bessie Childs and they had three sons and four daughters. In this letter he writes about the drought and difficult farming conditions, the difficulty in obtaining reliable workers, the cost of supplies, and his family.

Handwritten letter rom Thomas Conway of West Eyreton, Canterbury to his cousin dated December 27, 1896. In this letter he writes about the drought and difficult farming conditions in the Cust district, the difficulty in obtaining reliable workers, the cost of supplies, and his family.

Also includes 2 identical photographs of Ebenezer Conway's third child. Thomas was Ebenezer's brother. Photograph taken by J.G. Lamb, Christchurch.
