Biography

John Greenaway arrived in Canterbury on December 22, 1857 with his wife Hannah and infant daughter Charlotte on the Bosworth. He worked as a gardener and horticulturalist. By 1874 he owned about a fifth of the total nursery acreage in Canterbury. He was a foundation member of the Christchurch Horticultural Society. In later life Greenaway specialsed in roses and is commemorated in the John Greenaway Memorial Challege Trophy for roses. He was killed in a tramway accident on Papanui Road, November 30, 1880.
