Biography

James and Mary Jane Youngman left London on the Zealandia in 1858 and settled in Kaiapoi and later Oxford where he worked as a sawyer. They had 6 sons and a daughter. The family moved to Norsewood and later settled in Taranaki and Tauranga.

Scope and Contents

The papers of the Youngman family includes a family history following the descendants of their son James Reeve and his son Reeve who was Pat Youngman's father. The photocopied letter, dated December 6, 1858, was written to James's family in England and describes the voyage to New Zealand and his early experiences and impressions of New Zealand. Also includes a family Bible with records of family births 1840-1862.
